EdiMembre, Inc. Spins Out of MilliporeSigma to Deliver Enabling Future Food Manufacturing Capabilities for the Alternative Protein Industry

  • EdiMembre is set to commercialize edible membrane technology licensed from MilliporeSigma

  • Platform technology has been demonstrated in edible hollow fiber bioreactor systems for unlocking scalable whole-cut cultivated meat and producing novel high protein food products

(Woburn, Massachusetts) August 18, 2025—EdiMembre, a food technology company that develops enabling manufacturing capabilities for future food production, has spun out from MilliporeSigma, which is in US and Canada the Life Sciences brand of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany and has an exclusive license to commercialize an edible membrane platform technology developed at MilliporeSigma.

"Our deep understanding of the edible membrane technology and its potential for global impact, combined with our entrepreneurial drive, positions us uniquely to help accelerate the cultivated meat industry. Our focus moving forward will be on the development and commercialization of multiple novel alternative protein enabling manufacturing capabilities and products."

 

MilliporeSigma’s Cultivated Meat Program, as a strategic initiative, led to the development of a strong intellectual property portfolio and industry partnerships in the alternative protein space. This presented an externalization opportunity to develop the technology further via corporate venturing with mantro GmbH, a Germany based company builder who will manage the MilliporeSigma stake in the new company. At EdiMembre, the core patent protected edible membrane technology platform will be further developed and commercialized to create enabling manufacturing capabilities for future food production in the alternative protein market. Thus far, EdiMembre has developed countertop versions of edible hollow fiber bioreactors for the production of structured whole-cut pieces of cultivated meat and pasta exclusively made with legume protein isolate, both of which have been validated by industry partners.

To fuel the spinout, EdiMembre has secured a Pre-Seed investment of $400,000 from investors, including Siddhi Capital, Replicator VC, Meach Cove Capital, and Cellular Agriculture, Ltd., a portfolio company of Hilton Foods. Co-Founder and General Partner of Siddhi Capital, Steven Finn, said “I’ve known the EdiMembre team for years, and I am thrilled to see them take this step toward transforming cultivated meat.
